Tech-Talk #3: Medusa PRO 769 & 869

Who's ready for Tech Talk #3? Today we will talk about two of our most beloved products...

Medusa PRO 769 & 869

We would like to specify that we have excluded their smaller sister, WMP669, because she deserves a dedicated and more specific explanation… there will be an episode dedicated to her as well!

But let's get started!

What we like about the line

We really love Medusa PRO because it manages to combine versatility and performance in the best way. In fact, they are wings suitable for basically all disciplines and styles, whether you are focused on freestyle, freeride, or wave.

Plus, the most important thing is that it is a PRO item but balanced enough to make it accessible and fun for everyone (or almost everyone).

Our top riders' opinions

Today we have a few comments on these two incredible wings and we want to share them all with you!

GIULIO GASPERINI - Italy

“My favorite wing for freestyle is without any doubt the WMP769!

Extremely high performance, is stable, has good bounce, and is very fast. This speed naturally helps me go higher during jumps and stay on the foil after landing, ready to make a combo!

In addition, as this front wing can reach very good speeds, it also fits very well for fast freeride🤙.”

KIRAN VERMA - Australia

"Personally, I have found the Medusa PRO 769 and 869 to be a great surprise. Its ability in waves is unmatched by any foil I've used.

With early lift, amazing recovery when breached, and the fact it turns just as well at low speed as it does at top end means I've been able to push my riding beyond my imagination and put myself further into the critical part of the wave while being in full control.

For the everyday rider, the fact it's such a versatile foil means you can use it on flat water and just be as comfortable with the same foil when you take the leap into waves!”

BALZ MULLER - Switzerland

What better words to offer you than those of our foil pioneer and freestyle king Mr. Balz Muller? Here is his personal review on the line.

Technical insights

Here we are for the technical discussion. We start as always by looking at some numbers, which help us understand the properties of these wings.

As you can see the takeoff speed is very similar to that of the legendary Medusa 799, but the top speeds are completely on another level, as well as acceleration.

As explained earlier, everything in these wings was originally done to maximize its freestyle abilities. The line is indeed designed to enhance jump height in freestyle sessions and close advanced tricks.

But… the same characteristics, such as the much thinner profile, reduced surface/volume, and augmented AR, make these two wings outstanding for freeride and free race as well.

To ensure stability under acceleration, we decided to use a pronounced dihedral angle and some twist at the tips. This helps so much not only the PRO freestyler preparing for the maneuver but above all the ordinary rider who wants to reach high speeds safely.

The other super-obvious feature is the outline with the pointed nose… This, in addition to giving the Medusa PRO their distinctive trait, allowed us to retract the aerodynamic lift center of the wing, to provide superior maneuverability while turning and carving...

… unbelievable but true, this also makes the Medusa PRO ideal for riders who want to practice wave, as suggested by Kiran's comment!

Last but not least, the Medusa PROs are part of the T8 fuselage-connected wing family, so they provide a fast, high-performance alternative for all Sabfoilers who do not feel like changing systems and switching to the smaller T6 wings!

Recommended setups

By now, you will have realized that the Medusa PRO 769 and 869 are incredibly versatile wings and the everyday way to go for most riders. For this very reason, it is difficult to recommend a specific setup that works for everyone, but let's try our best!

If you are considering these wings specifically for their versatility and you want to do both freeride and freestyle, with a few wave sessions, opt for the equally versatile standard Kraken M83K or M93K masts, super stiff and with a balanced profile. Even an M73K is good if your spot is not too deep or you are more focused on wave riding. By the way, you will never go wrong!

Speaking of fuselages, we offer our Wing and Kite sets with the shortest T8 fuselage, the F663K, for maximum maneuverability both in freestyle and freeride. If you’re more freeride-focused and you want higher stability, feel free to choose the longer F703K, but we don’t recommend going up in size to the F753K, which is way too long for the performance of these wings. For Windfoiling the choice is obvious, you need an F903K.

For stabilizers, as always, the choice depends on your personal style and preference. Go for Flat if you like maneuverability, choose Reverse if you want to be fast and balanced, and aim for Gullwing if control is what you are looking for! Our personal choice is Reverse 375 for WMP769 and Reverse 395 for WMP869.

For those of you who are really focused on speed, we feel like telling you that you will achieve performance close to racing gear if paired with a Red Devil R8 mast, so much so that you could even compete.

For those instead who are all about the waves, you could achieve maximum lightweight and performance with a M76PK or M86PK Piuma mast R8.

In both cases, we recommend the R8 mast version to ensure maximum compatibility with the above-mentioned fuselages.

Be careful though, if you decide to use Piuma or Red Devil masts, forget about doing jumps and even freestyle, because they are not suitable for these purposes due to their High and Ultra High Modulus carbon fiber composition. We will explain why this is true with the high modulus carbon of any brand on the market in a future episode.

Are WMP769 / 869 the right choice for you?

In most cases, we simply get to say... "Yes".

In all honesty, we find no particular flaws or barriers for these two Medusa PRO...in our opinion, it is a game-changer product that we are very proud of.

In particular, the larger WMP869 is an incredibly versatile foil suitable for almost any condition and rider.

However, if this is the first time you are approaching freestyle our advice is to go through the regular Medusa, especially the legendary and still effective WM799. Once progressed it will be easy and exciting to upgrade to the PRO version.

Clearly, if you are a novice and still need to learn how to freeride this is not the right product for you. In this case opt for Tortuga or regular Medusa lines, or even the smaller sizes of the Leviathans, incredibly steady and good for learning.
